In this bonus episode, Blake, Sharon Mandell and Mark Kuhr have a discussion about the impact of agentic AI in cybersecurity, focusing on both threats and opportunities. They touch on the rise of AI-enabled cyberattacks and how adversarial and generative AI are being leveraged by attackers, as well as the dual-use nature of AI. How can it can be both a threat and a tool for defenders?
[00:00:00] Blake: Welcome everyone. I am Blake Thompson Heuer, Head of Communications at Synack, and I'm very excited to jump into this timely webinar discussion on how security leaders are meeting the Agentic AI threat. And joining me today are two such security leaders. We have Sharon Mandell most recently, chief Information Officer of Juniper Networks, and Mark Kuhr Synack CTO and co-founder.
[00:00:22] Thank you so much for joining, uh, to discuss this really urgent topic. Honestly, we've seen. AI enabled cybersecurity breaches start to claim headlines. It's clear that the state sponsored threat is really ramping up and, and cyber criminals have started to weaponize ai, uh, to really allow them to scale up the speed and, uh, devastation that these attacks can bring.
[00:00:42] So how, uh, just jumping right into the questions here, how are attackers leveraging adversarial AI agents and, and, and how about generative AI in their attacks? And, and Mark, maybe we'll start with you.
[00:00:56] Mark: Good question, Blake. You know, I think just, you know, think back 10, 20 years ago, people used to talk about script kitties and how, you know, scripts were enabling everybody to scale, attacks up and carry out. Large scale, uh, internet attacks and, and cause outages or take advantage of recently released vulnerabilities.
[00:01:15] It's, it's really that on steroids. Um, these AI agents are able to, you know, really have business logic inside of them that, uh, is as simple as a prompt. Uh, and, you know, people are gonna take advantage of that to scale up attacks. They're also getting really good at, you know, using tools and taking advantage of, uh, instructions.
[00:01:35] You give it, uh, to, to use the tool to, you know, have a path to implanting, you know, servers and, and really think on the fly about what attack to run next. So you don't have to explicitly program your attacks, which I think is the most interesting piece of how agents will change the landscape.
[00:01:53] Blake: And Sharon, how about you? And, and thanks again for taking the time out to join us today. Uh, how are you seeing attackers leverage these AI agents and new technologies?
[00:02:01] Sharon: Yeah, well, it, I mean, agents are, are the newest kind of animal on the, on the front. But, uh, you know, we have this, uh. Like increasing inability to trust what is reality, right? With, uh, gen AI able to create content and deep fakes, you don't necessarily know who you're talking to. Um, uh, there's just many, many other forms of attack in addition to velocity of attack and.
[00:02:35] Getting your, uh, user community or your employee community to really not only think about all the things, they never really got perfect at thinking about before. Like phishing, there's a whole new set of, of vectors that, that we're having to think about. And in some cases there's tools to help and in some cases there aren't.
[00:02:57] You're one mistake away from, from, you know, pretty significant, uh, impact.
[00:03:03] Blake: I am glad you mentioned tools that help because the other side of this coin, of course, is that it's also increasingly obvious that AI technology is an enormous asset, or certainly should be for defenders hoping to, uh, maybe match the adversarial speed and scale that we're. Seeing, uh, and has the potential to revolutionize really many aspects of cybersecurity in particular.
[00:03:22] But, uh, today I really was hoping, uh, each of you could hone in on the pen testing and vulnerability management space and, and the potential for AI to disrupt what's happening there. And, and maybe share in this time, uh, we'll start with you.
[00:03:38] Sharon: Uh, well first of all, we hope that we can get through the use of AI broader, more complete. Um. Uh, penetration tests, right? Where, uh, maybe you can feed in everything you know about your environment, but the AI can help you see what you don't know, um, and create areas of testing we might not think about. I find, you know, again, I'm, I'm the IT leader, not, you know.
[00:04:09] Not the ciso, but spend a lot of time thinking about security. But any kind of testing, we tend to think of the kind of straight line, normal cases, but we're not necessarily always good at finding those edge cases. And it's those edge cases. That attackers take advantage of. So I'm hoping that the AI will make us better at getting that kind of more complete picture as we go in and we try to simulate the kinds of things attackers might do to us.
[00:04:41] Blake: Mark. Your thoughts on the defensive piece.
[00:04:44] Mark: Nothing to disagree with on that. You know, I think it's really, it's a natural dual use technology. You know, it's, it's long been discussed. It's like it's double-edged sword. It's gonna serve defenders and offensive, offensive folks alike. Um, and the focus really has shifted, I think, on both sides to automation and using the AI to, to, you know, patch things faster, get ahead of vulnerabilities, uh, but it means that our mean time to remediate is gonna have to get reduced dramatically.
[00:05:11] Um, you know, in a world where agents are constantly on the hunt. Think about it as just a, it's, it's constantly there looking for the latest vulnerabilities, looking for your changing attack surface, waiting for that moment to exploit. Um, that is going to be the case, you know, lots of sharks in the water.
[00:05:28] How do you defend yourself, uh, when the sharks are numerous? Um, and they're gonna grow and they're not gonna have the same attacks, you know, so you can tell, you know, GR four for example, Hey, here's a vulnerability.
[00:05:40] Create an exploit script. Give me five variants of that, uh, and put 'em on all these different nodes. So it looks different on the wire, right? So you're not gonna necessarily, you know, have the same signature to defeat all the time. It's gonna be constantly moving around. And then, by the way, also leave the agent instructions every three hours.
[00:05:57] Rotate your nodes. Rotate your scripts. Rotate your payloads, and make sure you look different, you know, to any signature defeats. Um, so it's, it's really gonna be kind of next level in terms of the randomness. Um, and the, I think the effectiveness too. And the only way to defeat that is really to find the vulnerabilities faster.
[00:06:16] Remediate them quicker and it's gonna push us into a world for pen testing. That's not a point in time test anymore. You know, I think Sinna has been doing, you know, continuous testing for a while, but I think, you know, everybody's gonna realize continuous is where it's at. 'cause the attack surface is constantly shifting.
[00:06:31] Um, and we're gonna have to move everything to constant patch, constant assessment. Um, and it's just gonna go in a cycle and it's gonna be much, much faster than ever before.
[00:06:42] Sharon: and, and Blake, I'd like to add, you know, on the, on the positive front, you know, as a company that also develops technology products. One is, I think as a CIO, we're gonna be pushing a lot harder. On the quality of the work that gets done by our vendors, but as one of those vendors also, you know, we are looking at how do we use AI to recognize when we're creating vulnerabilities as we're creating the new features and functionality everybody wants to consume for us and hopefully.
[00:07:15] Get many of those resolved in the products to, to reduce that attack surface to begin with before the product goes out the door. So, you know, the, you know, the notion that we're gonna write bug free code is, you know, probably extreme, but we have technology to help us be better at it than ever before. And I think.
[00:07:36] Prevention should be top of mind for all of our technology partners and vendors. Knowing that we'll never be perfect then I, I agree a hundred percent with everything Mark said. Um, you know, nothing is gonna stay consistent long enough. Even, even just the way we're releasing software requires us to make changes at just a different pace.
[00:07:58] So whatever you thought was true yesterday or two hours ago probably isn't true now about your environment. Um. So I, I don't know any other way, but continuous to really get us to where we need to be.
[00:08:13] Mark: Yeah, it's really interesting 'cause like, you know, we're setting new records for, you know, speed of identity, of vulner, identification of vulnerabilities. Uh, you had 40,000 vulnerabilities, you know, identified with a CVE assignment last year. Um, you know, I fully expect that to be even greater. This year.
[00:08:31] And you know, that's just the stuff. Getting a CV number, that's not, that's not the full gamut. That's not all the custom apps. That's not the custom code, that's not the AI generated slop, uh, from vibe coders. That's being, that's introducing vulnerabilities. Faster than we were realizing. Um, and so it's gonna put additional pressure on the ecosystem of software, uh, third parties especially.
[00:08:52] But you know, you, you think about your risk. Um, it's growing. It's growing. It's not unfortunately getting, getting reduced. Um, so we're gonna have to figure out how AI can help us with this problem of identification and triage of vulnerabilities and how we can do that much, much faster. You know what I've been telling, you know, my team internally, you know, at our security team, is we need to go from detection to remediation in minutes, not not this week long, kind of multi-week process.
[00:09:20] It needs to be that fast because the offensive guys are gonna be throwing everything they've got at it and speed is gonna be the name of the game.
[00:09:28] Blake: Well to push with your shark analogy from earlier, I mean, any oceanic white tip, great white shark is gonna be able to outs swim your Michael Phelps's of the world. Right? It's, it's just not even a contest, and I think we're starting to see that in the AI era. How will the role of humans change with AI on security and technology teams? Is there still a need to keep a human in the loop with, with these new AI tools and technologies out
[00:09:52] Mark: I mean, automation's gonna, automation's come a long way, right? But it's, you're not gonna eliminate the humans in the process. I think eventually. You know, you're gonna have humans validating what the AI's doing. You're gonna have humans managing teams of agents. Um, so it'll shift around a little bit, but we're gonna need that human in the loop to verify that these, um, LLMs are doing what we want them to do.
[00:10:14] I mean, the reality is that we have non-deterministic execution through the lms, and we need to verify that they're, they're following the rules. So it's gonna be really important for humans to understand the guardrails, understand how do we implement those guardrails around the AI solutions. Further validate, uh, that the solution proposed is correct, um, and that it's actually accurate.
[00:10:36] Sharon: Yeah. I also think, you know, from a pragmatic standpoint, we can, we can sit and talk about how quickly we can automate patching, you know. Automate OS upgrades, software upgrades, but there's still this validation process you have to go through that the thing that you're changing doesn't break something else in the ecosystem.
[00:10:56] And I think humans will be for a while, pretty involved in. You know, understanding that big picture and, and that strategic aspect and understanding, oh, if this is coming my way, I have to look out for these three things because our environments know two of them are alike. Right. You know, and, and enterprise architecture.
[00:11:18] Um, at, at Juniper isn't the same as the one down the street at Extreme Networks or Cisco, right? Or HPE, you know, whether it's scale, set of products, types of customers, things drive us to do things much less consistently than we'd all like to and much less. Simplistically than we'd all like to, and I, I think there's still gonna be some human navigation in that process.
[00:11:44] 'cause you can't, you can't read that in the manual. There's never enough documentation. There's, there isn't the data for the AI to consume about that. At least not yet. As, as systems get better, it's throwing off exhaust and. And maybe you have those tools that can kind of suck that in and learn about the system, but, but I, I think we're a ways off from that.
[00:12:06] I just do, I think as smart as they're getting and as quick as things are changing, I still think we're a ways off from that.
[00:12:13] Mark: And in addition, you know somebody's responsibility at the end of the day, right? And so, you know that person who's accountable for those systems, whether it be for compliance with certain standards, PCI, high trust, whatever it may be. Some, some person is gonna sign on the dotted line that I assess that my controls are valid, they're working, and I'm the one who's getting fired.
[00:12:33] They don't work. That's not gonna be an AI agent anytime soon. Right. So humans are gonna be in this process verifying that those bots did exactly what we wanted to do, and we did our best effort to make sure things are secure.
[00:12:44] Sharon: Mark, that's my standard answer for the the media question of when is AI gonna replace your job, Sharon, as the CIO. I'm like, there's always gotta be somebody who's like making the risk decision and accountable for it, and who's gonna fall if they get it wrong? Right.
[00:12:59] Blake: Well, you said you worked closely with the CISO earlier, right? And, uh, maybe, maybe you can always blame the CISO on, on
[00:13:05] Sharon: Uh, yeah. It's a funny relationship, right? Um, uh, in my case it's a very good relationship, but, you know, they, they define the policy and the standard, but it's usually my team who does the execution. So I'd say we probably go up or down together, not one or the other.
[00:13:23] Blake: Well to, to that end I'd, I'd be curious, and I'm sure many of the webinar, uh, listeners here would be curious to hear as well, how, how are you triaging critical vulnerabilities today and, and are you feeling that pressure that we spoke to a little earlier to, to respond more quickly?
[00:13:40] Sharon: Y Yeah. Yes. Um, constantly, right? So first of all, it, we, we try to, the extent you can get the data to understand how we do relative to others, and we report on that regularly to the board and in, you know, invariably it, it, it's tough to keep up, right? So, you know, you have these. These events that happen are things that go on in your company and suddenly your numbers spike higher than they were.
[00:14:08] And you know, the board's looking at you constantly for that because there's just some basic things they expect you to do as part of your job. So there's, there's a ton of pressure. Um, you know, for us, uh, you know, we provide critical infrastructure. Um, so our customers put a ton of pressure on us. To be good because we're, we're, we could be the wink, weak link, connecting the bad guys to them.
[00:14:36] So, um, the pressure pressure's high. Um. I, you know, I think it's constantly a game of, um, prioritization. Um, trying to understand, you know, what your, what your most critical assets are, um, which vulnerability is being able to try to match the, the things that are coming in. 'cause there's way more than you can consume.
[00:15:02] And this is where AI can help ha you know, in that process of, Hey, this is the environment I have. Here's my CMDB and all the versions of everything I have, and here's what's coming in on the threat feed. How, how do you triage that for me to help me say, Hey, this thing over here looks like something you have over there, or, and, and, and put it together for you.
[00:15:24] Um, and you go after the things that you think are the most important. Um, you, you put a lot of protection around, um, you know. We're not a believer and despite the fact that, you know, we sell network security products and we still think they're very important, we know the network alone can't secure, you know, the inside.
[00:15:47] So we run a zero trust architecture. We do a lot of things to try to minimize the visibility of that, any piece of the attack surface to the outside world. Um. We're understanding who it is that's using things, but it's, it's a constant race and you're, I, you know, if I thought about it as much as I should every day, I probably wouldn't sleep at night.
[00:16:09] But you know, that's probably, you know, by. Kind of understanding. We're just, you know, staying focused on that, that, that, that core set of things that are most important and that we're trying to minimize that attack surface by creating these, you know, micro segments that are between the user and any given application that they're using.
[00:16:32] Um, we're, we're, we're hoping we can, we can stay ahead of them and that, the other thing is we always like to say that, um. You know, these, these guys who are out there attacking some are going after some very specific things. And so there's a certain set of threat actors that are interested in us for a certain set of reasons, but we, we just have to be that much harder than the next guy to break into.
[00:16:56] And so we're trying to stay ahead of our peers on that too, right? Um, and, and really be at the forefront of where security architecture's going so that, um. There's, there's, you know, as they say, people closer to the bear to be caught.
[00:17:13] Blake: on it. Right, right. Well, I Go
[00:17:14] Mark: it's, it's quite a heavy, yeah. It's quite a heavy burden to triage all that, you know, if you think through all the, uh, especially the massive infrastructure that somebody, like a company like Juniper has, right? It's a lot to triage and you know, at some point some analysts has to dig into the findings that the scanners are churning up or the security bulletins that you're getting.
[00:17:32] Um, and go through and see whether those are applicable. A synex approach to that is to launch a, a triage agent, um, system that will triage that with a multi-agent approach and see whether those, uh, are applicable or not. It's kind of a first level triage and then surface those, uh, to the security engineers say, Hey, this is our first pass, but you know, this is where you should start.
[00:17:54] Um, and, and work the remediation angle from there. The reality is there's, there's two many to look at, all of 'em in depth, and we need more help and more analysts in these. These agent systems we're able to really scale 'em up, uh, to, to meet the need. Uh, so they can do a lot of things in parallel. Um, and I think that's where the real power is gonna come in and augmenting the existing security workforce that's out there today.
[00:18:16] Not necessarily a replacement story, but. You know, most security teams are, you know, under underwater with going through all this information. And if they can have agents that do the first pass and take a, take a hard look at those, uh, the criteria by which things should be prioritized specific to that business, um, and specific to that architecture, and really tailored to the same way and the same workflow.
[00:18:40] Enterprise security teams are, are used to operating. The agent will essentially become an extension of the team, and, and you can scale that team up with just, uh, very, very low cost compared to hiring people.
[00:18:53] Blake: We heard it from Sharon earlier that, uh, notion of keeping one step ahead of the, of the bear, you know, one step ahead of the next person. Also racing against that bear that represents the adversary in this case. And the prioritization piece that you mentioned as well, mark, uh, is just essential to that.
[00:19:08] If you, if you have at least a sense a starting point of where to where to really just start the real hard work that goes into securing large enterprises like Juniper Networks. Um, that makes all the difference. And if an AI agent can help with that, well, uh, I expect we'll hear a little bit more from that, from our senior Vice president of product a little later in this webinar.
[00:19:27] So, uh, but what can organizations do broad based here to, to avoid falling behind in that race that you described, Sharon? Like, what, what are the steps that someone who wants to be more proactive, uh, should take when assessing their security posture in the AI era?
[00:19:44] Sharon: Well, a, again, I think the first thing you need is, is always visibility, right? So you, you have to understand what you're trying to accomplish, um, what, what your most important assets are, and then you need as much visibility. To the events and the data that are going on as possible. Um, you know, this is the approach Juniper took with the network, right?
[00:20:10] Was, um, you know, e elevating that. Control point a away from any individual device, but into a place, you know, into the cloud where you can see what's going on everywhere. Collecting consistent telemetry, being able to recognize things that are out of the norm. Um, and I, I think all of those same steps that we did to make it possible to better manage your network are the same kinds of things.
[00:20:39] That you're gonna do to recognize, um, anomalies and, and behavior patterns, uh, in the security space and understanding, you know, when they changed, did they change because of an intended change, something that was maybe made through those systems? Um, or are those changes that were unexpected and again. If you have that picture of what's happening with intent versus.
[00:21:10] What's happening that's not expected. That helps with that prioritization Mark talked about because, you know, you, you, you don't focus on the things you knew were going to change. You focus on the things that, that, that were unexpected. And so, um, I, I, I think it's. It's really figuring out how you get that real definition and data of what normal looks like and, and, and, and, and how do you communicate into the systems and the data that those changes that you are making so that.
[00:21:45] You have the technology and these agents who are able to help you with the things that aren't expected and, and high first highlight them to you, but then ultimately, um. You know, through, through, and again, this is where human in the loop comes in. Um, you might not trust a technology to take action on your behalf without human in the loop for a while.
[00:22:07] But if you find yourself knocking down that same alarm over and over and over again, then you know, you, you start to. Allow and develop that trust in the technology so that the technology can take action. And you get that scale that Mark talked about, um, without adding more people, um, and get your people focused again on that more strategic work.
[00:22:28] Blake: Right. Right. Well, what.
[00:22:29] Mark: get to that point, right? It's gonna get to that point where the, the rate of discovery is so high. That you're gonna have to automate. I mean, look at what's happening in warfare. I think it's an interesting analogy. You've got, uh, the war in Ukraine going on. You've got drone on drone attacks and counter attacks going on, and it's, it's a too dangerous of a war, of a battle space for humans to operate.
[00:22:53] At some point, you're gonna have to let you know the machines, attack the machines, and, you know, that's, that's where cyber is going. And so if you look at how, you know, organizations can stay away, stay ahead of this, they can automate. Remediation, they can automate detection, move to continuous testing, uh, start to embrace AI initially for triage, then move to, um, you know, full mitigation and then eventually remediation.
[00:23:16] Uh, but this obviously is gonna take a lot of guardrails, a lot of testing, a lot of, you know, final approvals event. You know, initially start with human in the loop. But eventually we're gonna get out of the way once our test cases are so robust that we're like, yep, it's gonna good. It's good, it's gonna handle.
[00:23:32] 80% of the problem, great humans will focus on the 20% of edge cases. Uh, this is, this is the way it's going, and I think it's the only effective way, uh, to really mitigate the changing threat landscape. Um, you know, especially if you believe that, you know, all the, all the hype around AI agents and what they can do from a discovery of exploitable violence perspective, um, they're, they're getting quite robust at doing this.
[00:23:56] Um, and so I think we could really see this changing landscape in the next two to three years. We're gonna have to adjust the way that we've operated the last 20 years is not gonna work.
[00:24:07] Sharon: we just, you can't keep up. The people can't do it. Um, and that's, you know, some of the things like when, when Mark talks about guardrails, right? You're gonna trust AI to make changes. the way you trust people to make changes, you're gonna expect them to be able to back out those changes. Like recognize when they made a mistake and, and, and adapt.
[00:24:27] It's not, they just, and to his point that it's, this is no longer some like linear deterministic system that only goes in one direction. That they're, they're gonna have to, you're gonna have different types of agents, the ones who are the sort of. Action doers, the ones that validate that those things actually behave the way you expected.
[00:24:47] The ones who can take action to return it to a previous state, if not. And so I think right now we're so focused on just learning how to do the action. You don't hear a lot of us talking about those other things, but just like we had to do that with software developers,
[00:25:03] Blake: we're,
[00:25:04] Sharon: um, in, in the human world, we're gonna have to do that in the agent world too.
[00:25:09] Blake: Mark touched on this a little bit and I, I did appreciate the analogy of the, the drone warfare that we're seeing really on the literal frontier with the battle between Ukraine and Russia, but also the, you know, proverbial frontier for, for physical warfare. What is that next frontier?
[00:25:24] Uh, and this will be the last question because I know a lot of our webinar attendees, I'm sure are eager to get to the demo portion, but what will be that next frontier for AI technology? In the vulnerability management space, say
[00:25:41] Sharon: Look, I think, I think just getting to the point where. The humans and the agents communicate with each other in the same way. Uh, for a long time, I, I've been, you know, when we were just talking about chatbots, pre gen ai, I would, and, you know, I started to become familiar with our technology and we have, I always had a chatbot in it called Mars, right.
[00:26:05] And. I, I, I'm watching, you know, ServiceNow build this technology where, um, you know, different people can come in and they can be in the war room, right? And I'm like, okay, well now you have the agent as the bots, a first class citizen in that war room. I mean, I don't think it's long before we're like literally being snarky and joking around with the agent in one of those war room conversations.
[00:26:32] I, I, I think that's the first thing is. You know, do, when does that agent become trusted enough that you expect it to communicate with you almost as if it's not different than who you are.
[00:26:45] Blake: longer,
[00:26:46] Sharon: Um, but it's faster with a bigger base of knowledge than you can keep in your head, um, who can see things and offer you ideas faster than the people can come up with them, because we just can't process the volumes of data.
[00:27:02] That, you know, security and, and networking use, it's, it's just not within human's capacity to consume it in real time. And so that's where we need that technology to help us out. And I, I think that's, you know, it's agent on human in a room like we are right here, having conversations. Right. That's for me, the frontier we're gonna have where they're, where they're giving us advice.
[00:27:28] Blake: Mark, any closing thoughts?
[00:27:29] Mark: agree. I mean, yeah, beyond, beyond Vault management, I think it impacts just about everything In cyber, I think all these agents will be onboarded like an employee. You know, they'll get a, a Slack or a teams account, they'll get a full identity. Uh, they'll be trained in a certain job, maybe multiple jobs.
[00:27:46] Um, and they'll give, be given context about your business and how you operate and how your systems work, what your architecture is, what your deployment process is, your patch review, your qa, all that stuff. And so I can, I can see shadow teams being developed that are agent teams that do have those humans in the loop, but at some point.
[00:28:05] Some portion of those workflows will be handed off to the agent. When we build enough guardrails, enough trust, just like we do with automation today, like we have automated tests and we deploy code, and it it, you know, somebody merges a change, it passes the test, it automatically gets deployed. All that happens, right?
[00:28:20] So the next evolution of that is, is a higher level analysis. Um, taking into account maybe multiple systems and multiple signals, um, that's a, that's a bit more sophisticated and requires less explicit engineering, which means more processes can be extended to it. Um, and as, as you, as, it doesn't require, you know, complex coding and, and everything like that.
[00:28:41] And you can just chat with it and it takes actions. Through, through Tool Connections, you're gonna find lots of use cases and we're gonna, we're gonna be in a place where there's so many different AI systems and workflows set up. We're gonna be wondering how the heck we QA all these things and how we validate 'em and secure those workflows too.
[00:28:58] So this is where it's all going, but you know, at the end of the day, we're gonna have to move faster. We're gonna have to. Continuous testing. Uh, one of our, one of our just staples of how we do everything. 'cause the world is constantly changing. Um, and then when we, when we find things, we're gonna assess 'em with agents and we're gonna push 'em up in priority if they're valid, uh, valid findings.
[00:29:18] And, you know, that will eventually connect into remediation. And we're gonna find ourselves in a place where some things are just fully automated from detection to validation to remediation.
[00:29:29] Blake: Well, we'll have to pick up the conversation again in a, in a, in a few months, years. We'll see. This technology moves so fast, who knows? But Sharon, mark, thank you so much for joining the webinar. I'm sure the viewers really appreciated hearing, uh, insights from, from the front lines of security leadership here, really.
